Chinese Lantern



Materials

DK in red, black & yellow
5mm crochet hook or larger if you would prefer
Stuffing
Yarn needle
12mm toy safety eyes or back yarn if you would prefer to embroider eyes
Scissors

Each row is worked in the round.
Terminology is in US terms. 

Abbreviations

Rnd - round
Sc – single crochet
sc2tog – single crochet the next two stitches together
BLO – back loops only 

Main body [red]

Rnd 1: sc 6 st into a magic circle [6]
Rnd 2: work 2sc in each st [12]
Rnd 3: work (1sc into next st, 2sc into the net st) 6 times [18]
Rnd 4: work (1sc into the next 2 sts, 2sc into the next st) 6 times [24]
Rnd 5: work (1 sc into the next 3 sts, 2sc into the next st) 6 times [30]
Rnd 6-9: work 1sc in each st. [30]
Rnd 10: work (1sc into the next 3 sts, sc2tog) 6 times [24]
Rnd 11: work (1sc into the next 2 sts, sc2tog) 6 times [18]
Rnd 12: work (1sc into the next st, sc2tog) 6 times [12]
Rnd 13: work (sc2tog) 6 times [6]
Fasten off – leave a long tail for fastening up.

Place toy safety eyes in desired place.
Sew on smile.
Stuff slightly.

Cut a long length of yellow yarn. Tie a knot in one end. Sew through top of the lantern & back through the base of the lantern. Repeat 5 times avoiding the face. 
Fasten off.

Stuff the lantern completely and sew up the base.

Lantern Top [black]

Rnd 1: sc 5st into a magic circle [5]
Rnd 2: work 2sc into each st [10]
Rnd 3: work (1sc, into next st, 2sc into the next st) 3 times [15]
Rnd 4: working in BLO sc in each st [15]
Rnd 5: sc in each st [15].
Fasten off – leave a very long tail for sewing & making the hanging loop.

Sew to the top of the lantern ¾ of the way around. Stuff lightly. Sew up the last ¼ but do not cut the yarn. Sew up through the top of the lantern top & make a loop.

Lantern Base [black]

Rnd 1: sc 6sts into a magic circle [6]
Rnd 2: work 2sc into each st [12]
Rnd 3: working in the BLO sc in each st [12]
Fasten off – leave a long tail for sewing up.

Lantern Tassel [yellow]

Cut 5 long lengths of yellow yarn.
Tie a knot in the end of one strand & sew down the centre of the lantern base. Sew up a loop & tie a knot on the inside of the lantern base with each loop. Work each strand the same. Cut the loops & trim the fringe to the desired length.



Sew ¾ of the lantern base to the bottom of the lantern body & stuff gently. Sew the rest up & fasten off.
