Rainbow Pom Pom

Rainbow Pompom

You will need….

Small amounts of yarn in rainbow colours - I used Stylecraft Special DK

A pompom maker in any size - in this tutorial I used  4” pompom maker - I would not recommend any smaller as there are a lot of colours involved

Scissors - a good sharp pair for cutting

Thread for typing up the pompom - I used embroidery thread.

Patience - this did not work first time for me & that is the joy of fancy pompom making!

Start by wrapping the red yarn around 2/3rds of the first pompom arm & match the other side

Wrap the orange on top - don’t worry about the ends being all neatly tucked away

Then yellow

Followed by pink

On the third of the pompom maker without any yarn wrap the blue first - make sure the build it up thick towards the edge of the pompom feet.

Then green.

Finally the purple & close the pompom maker

Take your scissors & start trimming the pompom being careful not to let go! Take your time as depending on how many wraps of the yarn you have done this can be quite thick!

Take your thread & tie the pompom together tightly - I do a double knot at the bottom & the top - make sure you pull tight! Using a thinner thread than the yarn helps pull it closer together.

Open up the pompom maker & release the colourful mess - it won't be pretty now - rub it into a ball shape in your hands & it’s time to get brave!

Pom-pom trimming time!

I use a pasta serving bowl coz there's gonna be a lot more mess than you realise & it does
escape. The only thread you don't want to cut is the one tied in the middle but you will be surprised how much you can trim off.

You can become obsessed with trimming to make it the perfect shape that you will eventually ruin it so be careful…

Trim the pom pom into a circle - the deeper you cut into the pom pom the more solid & ‘fuzzy’ it looks so this is personal preference.

I cut straight across the blue to create the rainbow ‘arch’

You can pull out any bits of yarn that might be in the wrong place - just be warned that the more you pull out the more you weaken the integrity of the pompom.

I manipulated the yarn a little by poking it in place to get the colour bands as I wanted them pretty uniform.

This is trial & error - I made two pom poms at the same time & I over trimmed one of them…I’ve also left the threads on them so I can hang them up!

It’s all just a bit of fun though & a great way to get the kids involved with crafting & experimenting with colours.

Stay home….stay safe xxx
